DIY: Building a Website
You really can do this!!!
Home      Create Web Site

Using cPanel

From Web Hosting services like WebHostingBuzz.com

Log into your account on cPanel.  You should have a URL that looks something like this:
http://mywebsite.com:2082  (Note: The URL mywebsite.com is being used simply as an example, I have no affiliation with this site.)

Add a new web site:

1. Click on “RVSiteBuilder” to start creating your new web site.
Software Portlet
2. Click “Create Web Site.”
Create Web Site button
3. Enter a name for this project, your web site's title, name, slogan, and an icon if you have them.  If you don't want to fill out one of these, just click the check box.  Press “Save and Continue.”  Remember you can always go back and change this later.
Step 1
4. Next pick a web template that you want to use.  Remember you can go back and change this later.
Web Template
5. You can make some further modifications to your template, such as picking a color to use, font to use, or move the location of your Company Name and Slogan.  You can also add code (text or pictures, etc) that will show up on all of the pages within your web site.  I'm not going to go into any of that here.  Click “Save” to move to the next step.
Step 3
6. Add pages to your site.  This will determine how many tabs you have on your site. We'll just keep things really simple and have just one page (one tab).  I've selected “No Layout Template.”  Click “Save.”
Step 4
7. Now let's edit our page using the WYSIWYG editor.  Click on WYSIWYG.
Step 5

8. A new browser window or tab will open.  You may be asked if you want to “See tutorials” or if you want to “Build your website.”  I'm going to select “Build your website.”

9. I'm going to add some basic text to my site just to try things out.
Add Text to Web Site
10. Next I'm going to add a Picasa photo slide show to page.  I've added some text to my page to help me quickly find the spot where I want the photo slide show to go.  Now, I'm going to click on “Source” in the upper right of this screen shot.
Text for where to Put Slide Show
11. I can see the HTML for my web site now.  And I found the text that I want to replace with my photo slide show.
WYSIWYG Source View

12. I will go to http://picasa.google.com to get my photo slide show.
From my album view, I'll click on “Link to this album”
Next, I'll click on “Embed Slideshow” I've modified some of settings such as selecting a Medium slideshow size.

13. I'll copy the text from Picasa.
Embed Code from Picasa
14. And go back to my web site editor and paste in the text.
Add Embed Code to WYSIWYG
You can see that on line number 3 there's the following text <embed … and it ends with embed/>.
End of Embedded Code

15. Now I'll click “Save.”  WYSIWYG Save button

16. At this point I can either click on the X in the upper right corner, or I can simply go back to my other RVSiteBuilder tab.  I'm going to click the X.
Close WYSIWYG Editor
17. Now I have completed my first web page, but I'd like to look at it before I publish it to the internet.  So I'm going to click on “Preview.”
RVSiteBuilder Preview Button
18. A new window comes up and it tells me that it's building my preview.
Building Preview

19. Once this completes, I see my new web site.  Remember, it's just a preview and it's not on the internet yet!  If I'm happy with my preview, then I can publish the web site.

20. Back in RVSiteBuilder, I can click on Step 7.  RVSiteBuilder Publish Button
21. Now I can publish my web site.
Step 7
22. You may get a Warning during the publication, it's to warn you that you will be overwriting previous files.  You will see this any time you make updates to your web site.  I encourage you to make backups of your project after you publish updates.  So in this example, I'm going to continue with publishing.
Publish Test

23. After it's done publishing, it will launch my new web site.  I should test my web site on Firefox and Internet Explorer to make sure it displays well on both of these.
24. Back in RVSiteBuilder I'm going to go back to the “Home.” So that I can make a backup of my web site. RVSiteBuilder Home Button

25. At the bottom of the Home page to RVSiteBuilder, there's a Backup and Restore section.  I'm going to click on “Backup”.
Backup Project
26. A warning comes up to tell me that this backup will only backup my web site and not any blogs or forums.  Since I haven't created my own blogging site or my own forum site this backup will be just fine for me.  Click “Next.”
Backup Warning Message
27. After it does it's thing, my backup is ready to be downloaded.  I will click on the link to download my backup.  I can store my backup on a memory key if I want.
Download Backup

28. Now I can close that window.  And I'm done until I have updates to make.
